A few blocks from the world-renowned University of Kansas Medical Center student housing option are limited beyond repurposed single-family homes and low-quality apartment buildings. This mixed-use structure locates at a high-traffic corner in the Rosedale neighbohrood featuring screened surface parking, 4,000SF of retail/ office space, 1,750SF of live-work space, and 20 dwelling units aimed at young medical students.
The design anchors itself to the street via a dark grey brick plinth that splits allowing entry. Two floors of dwelling units above project and recede from the limits of the brick plinth in respones to the traffic levels of the adjacent streets.
The dwelling unit floors become wrapped in a vertical wood with panels that help to break down the massing. Vibrant colored stripes pay homage to the nearby Rosedale Mural Project.
