house_28 is a weekend lake retreat for an established, worldly renowned interior and furniture designer. The residence will boast 1200 square feet of exterior deck and patio space for entertaining - all overlooking the lake. The organization of the house is one that orients itself transversely to the lake awarding all rooms spectacular lake views. Materials were chosen for their inherent texture and ability to naturally withstand the elements creating a virtually maintenance free exterior.

The house draws formal inspiration from the vernacular farmsteds that seemingly spotted the plains and highways of the Midwestern United States over the past 200 years - many now abandoned and dilapidated. The vernacular form, a simple rectangle in plan extruded skywards, then has a more contemporary volume inserted into the east facing facade framing the staircase. On the opposing facade a depression in the facade on the lowest level mimics the same. These 'contemporary insertions' become clad in fiber cement panels reminiscent of plate steel. A detached parking structure follows the same formal strategy and is connected to the house via a small bridge.

The project has been cancelled.
